Cambridge IELTS Book-11, Speaking Test-1

Part-1 (Food and cooking)

All the answers for this IELTS Speaking Test have been written easily and properly by Syed Woares

1] What sorts (types) of food do you like eating most? (Why?)

Actually, I like eating all sorts of hygienic (germ-free) and nourishing food. Normally, I prefer to have (eat) home-made food. My mother/wife is an expert cook. Almost every day she makes chicken curry, mutton curry, and vegetable curry. All are very delicious. Moreover, occasionally she prepares very tasty biryani and polao. As all are home-made lovely food, I eat the food with great satisfaction.

2] Who normally does the cooking in your home? (Why / Why not?)

Normally, my mother/wife does the cooking in our house. My mother/wife is a home-maker. At the same time, she is very passionate about cooking various types of dishes. As I am a student/ professional person, I don’t get that much time to cook. I love to eat my mother’s/wife’s hand-cooking very much. That is why; I left the matter of my home cooking to my mother/wife.

3] Do you watch cookery programs on television? (Why / Why not?)

As I don’t have any interest in cooking, I don’t watch cookery programs on television. But my mother/wife is very much fond of watching cookery programs on television. Watching such cookery programs on television, they can learn so many new terms of cooking. Later they utilize such experience to make several delicious menus. (Programme=British, Program=USA)

4] In general, do you prefer eating out or eating at home? (Why?)

Most of the time, I prefer to eat at home. As my mother/wife makes three to four delicious curries every day, I don’t need to go outside to eat. Besides, to some extent, eating outside food may not be that much hygienic.

Part-2 (Cue Card)

Describe a house/apartment that someone you know lives in.

Now I would like to describe one house where one of my cousins lives. The house is located at Uttara in Dhaka. Sometimes, I go to this house to meet my cousin. It is a beautiful, 3 storied bungalow type house. The house is situated in the middle of the land. There are so many green trees surrounding the house. Most of them are various types of fruit trees such as mango, guava, jackfruit, litchi, coconut, blackberry, lemon etc. There are also different types of flower plants around the house like rose, Jasmin, marigold etc. All such fruit trees and flower plants have made the house more attractive and more charming.

The house was built with costly tiles and expensive materials. There are four rooms on every floor. All rooms are nicely decorated with luxurious furniture and expensive curtains. There are so many eye-catching show-pieces in every room. Every floor has a long specious balcony and the balcony is covered with some beautiful chairs and tables. It is an ideal place for chatting and sitting on the balcony, people can enjoy the greenery of the surrounding garden. When I visit this good-looking house, I feel extremely good and I can inhale fresh oxygen.

Part-3 (Discussion topics: Different types of home)

1] What kinds of homes are most popular in your country? Why is this?

Brick-built homes are most popular in the rural and the semi-rural areas in our country. These types of homes are more durable and sustainable to face natural calamities like floods, cyclones, earthquakes etc. On the other hand, apartments are most popular in the cities of our country. The price of land is too (very) high in the cities. That is why building a personal home is very expensive in a city. As a result, maximum city-dwellers prefer to live in apartments.

2] What do you think are the advantages of living in a house rather than an apartment?

If I live in a house then the whole building will be mine. I can use every space of that building as per (according to) my wish. On the contrary, if I live in an apartment then I will be able to use only a limited space in that building. I won’t be able to control and use the entire (whole) building. Besides, I can make a garden surrounding the open space of my house and I can plant my preferred trees and vegetables there. So, it is clear that living in a house, I will get more liberty (freedom) and comfort than living in an apartment.

3] Do you think that everyone would like (want) to live in a large home? Why is that?

At present, it is very expensive to live in a large home. Many workers and servants are needed to maintain a large home. To pay the salary of those workers and servants regularly is really very difficult for an owner of a large home. Moreover, a large home also needs other maintenance costs. Therefore, to live in a large home is ostensibly (clearly) a great burden. Only very few rich people can afford to reside (live) in a large home.

(Example questions: Finding a place to live)

1] How easy is it to find a place to live in your city?

My city Dhaka is a very crowded (over-populated) city. Almost 2 crore people live in this large city. Only 20% inhabitants of this city have their own houses or apartments. So, it indicates that nearly 80% residents of this city dwell (live) either in rented rooms or apartments. As a result, the value of land in this city is extremely high and the house-rent is also very excessive. Therefore, it can be said that to find a place to live in Dhaka, is not at all easy but very difficult.

2] Do you think it is better to rent or to buy a place to live in? Why?

A purchased place is much better than a rented place to live in. If we live in a rented place continuously then the rent of this place will be increasing gradually. Obviously, it will be a burden for us. On the other hand, a purchased place is fully ours. We can live there independently and permanently for a long time. Nobody can dare to evict us from this place. Purchased land is also economically profitable because the price of this purchased land will be going up (increasing) day by day. So, by selling this land, we can get more money in the future.

3] Do you agree that there is a right age for young adults to stop living with their parents? Why is this?

I think children should live with their parents unless they are compelled to go to another place for better education or for a better career. No child should abandon their parents. If children live with their parents, they always get all types of mental support and fruitful advice from their parents.
